An information session took place in Brussels today on the European Region of Gastronomy award, which will be officially launched by a newly formed platform of European regions in January 2015.
The award aims to contribute to better quality of life in European regions, by highlighting distinctive food cultures, educating for better health and sustainability and stimulating gastronomic innovation. In our view, this can best be achieved by organising an event and a knowledge-exchange platform with the support of European institutions, coordinated by an independent body that can help to collect and disseminate the knowledge that is generated by the activity of the participating regions.
The meeting was chaired by Anton Rombouts, Chair, Education and Culture of the Committee of the Regions. Prof. Greg Richards, President of the European Region of Gastronomy award explained the conceptual idea behind the European Region of Gastronomy and candidate regions provided an insight into what they are planning for their year.
The public session was followed by a tasting of products from the European Regions of Gastronomy network.
The information meeting took place at the Permanent Representation of Malta to the European Union. The candidate regions will meet again tomorrow at the Central region Denmark offices to develop further their plans for this exciting project.
