Judging the Regions

The International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT) is the operative institute overseeing the management and coordination of the platform and competition.

IGCAT has formed a small group of regions –  a ‘coalition of the willing’ – who are committed to testing out different formats for the programme as well as staging the event over the first few years.  The list of these  partner regions can be found here. After the initial pilot period, the programme will then be run as an open competition to all European regions.

IGCAT carries out the following functions:

  • Establish the rules/criteria for selection (in agreement with the founding partners)
  • Employ a jury/panel of experts and coordinate the process of examining applications and field visits
  • Monitor activities in the field and co-ordinate the work of partner organizations
  • Carry out performance evaluation of each European Region of Gastronomy on a regular basis
  • Provide insights on the effects/impacts of the European Region of Gastronomy on SMEs, network and cluster development
  • Coordinate the platform of European Region of Gastronomy partners
  • Share knowledge on cultural and educational exchanges
  • Represent the European Region of Gastronomy initiative at forums and international events
  • Promote sustainable and quality tourism development
  • Encourage gastronomy that focuses on/highlights unique cultural traditions, tastes and flavours
  • Disseminate and archive information documents related to the European Region of Gastronomy

> An independent pool of experts will form the selection jury for the European Region of Gastronomy award. They will be selected by IGCAT on the basis of their  impartiality and availability to visit the regions. Regions are also invited to nominate additional experts and potential jury members. The profile for the selection jury should include people from different sectors, such as chefs, food journalists, other food industry workers, as well as members of  knowledge institutes within tourism or culture.

The role of the  jury members is not just to evaluate whether the bidding regions have sufficiently met the criteria  to host the label, but also to guide, mentor and support the regions in obtaining longer-term benefits from the programme.
